elephant dung paper project

On average an elephant will eat 200-250 kg of food a day….. from that we get 50 kg of dung. An elephant's dung is just fibre. Elephants are poor digesters of their food and over 50% of what they eat comes straight out the other end. The elephants are kindly doing the first stage of any paper making process – collecting the fibres. Elephant dung does not smell that bad. It is 100% bacteria free.

How does this idea came to make Papper out of the dung ?

Sher Bahadur Pariyar has a Hotel in Chitwan National Park, Sauraha (Hotel Parkside). He has 2 Elephants which are used by tourists to go to the jungle to watch wild animals. Because of the large amount of dung created by the elephants there are huge piles of it around the village. Sher Bahadur Pariyar always wanted to find a use for it but didn’t know how. In 2006 he travelled to Bangkok in Thailand where he saw a factory which makes paper out of Dung. He was inspired by this and when he came back to Nepal he told his friends about it. With the help of Birendra Chaudari , Basu Dhungana, Basu Bidari, Promod Khakurel, and Rnajana Pajiyar he decided to make paper in Chitwan. With the guidance of Promod Khakurel and Solidarit France Nepal, the local team developed a business plan and also provided financial support.

Our 1st job was to form an organization, so we registered ”Green Society Nepal” (Save the Environment for future“) in the District Head office Bharatpur, Chitwan. The main aim of this organization is to work to educate people and protect Environment.
